About AGI by ZIP
What is this site?
AGI by ZIP provides free access to income data broken down by ZIP code, city, and state. You can look up any U.S. ZIP code to see average income levels, how income is distributed across brackets, and how it compares to other areas in the state and nation.
What is AGI?
AGI stands for Adjusted Gross Income. It's your total gross income minus specific deductions (like student loan interest, IRA contributions, and educator expenses). AGI is reported on Line 11 of IRS Form 1040 and is the primary measure of income used in tax calculations.
Data
All data is derived from publicly available federal tax filing statistics for Tax Year 2022. This data is published annually with approximately a two-year lag. The dataset covers approximately 27,600 unique ZIP codes across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Income Brackets
Tax returns are grouped into six AGI brackets:
| Bracket 1 | $1 – $25,000 |
| Bracket 2 | $25,000 – $50,000 |
| Bracket 3 | $50,000 – $75,000 |
| Bracket 4 | $75,000 – $100,000 |
| Bracket 5 | $100,000 – $200,000 |
| Bracket 6 | $200,000 or more |
Methodology
For each ZIP code, we aggregate data across all six brackets to compute total returns, total AGI, and average AGI. National and state rankings are based on average AGI per return. ZIP codes with zero returns are excluded. The "median bracket" indicates which bracket contains the 50th percentile return for that ZIP code. City-level statistics are computed by aggregating all ZIP codes associated with each city.
Important Caveats
AGI reflects tax returns filed, not total population or household income. High-AGI ZIP codes may have fewer returns if they have small populations. ZIP codes with colleges or military bases may show lower AGI due to the demographics of filers. Capital gains, which can vary dramatically year to year, are included in AGI and can cause fluctuations in wealthy ZIP codes.
